Why clearing snow is the owner’s duty
In Germany the duty to clear and grit the pavement in front of a property lies with the owner. It can be passed on by contract — to a company like us or to the tenants — but the responsibility does not disappear: if something happens, what counts is whether the clearing can be proven. That is where most cases are decided, not on the snow itself.
So we work with proof: after every visit you get a short message with the time and a photo of the cleared area. It costs us two minutes and can save you an unpleasant conversation with the insurer.
When the area has to be clear is defined in the street cleaning statute of the City of Leipzig — early in the morning on working days, later on Sundays and holidays, and the duty ends in the evening. We plan our round accordingly and come a second time during continuous snowfall.

We clear by hand: shovel, broom, scraper for ice. For a normal building that is faster than machinery, because most of it is steps, corners and narrow paths a machine cannot reach anyway.
