Why doors in old Leipzig buildings are their own story

In old Leipzig buildings almost nothing fits off the shelf. Openings are higher than today’s standard sizes, walls are thicker, and after a hundred years hardly any frame is still plumb. So we measure before you buy: clear width and height, wall thickness, hinge side.

Measure first, buy second

The most common mistake: a door bought at the DIY store, and on site two centimetres of height are missing or the frame is made for a thinner wall. Send us a photo of the opening with a tape measure before buying — it is free and saves the return.

What belongs to the job after fitting

A door is only finished when it behaves properly: it does not swing open, does not scrape the floor, closes softly and the lock engages without pressure. That is adjustment work on the hinges — exactly the part usually skipped when fitting a door yourself.

How much does fitting an interior door cost?

A door with frame comes to 250–350 €/door, material on top. If the frame stays and only the leaf is replaced, we charge by the hour at 40–60 €/hr. Replacing a lock costs 60–80 €, sanding and repainting an old door 100–150 €.

How long does one door take?

Changing the leaf takes one to two hours, a door with a new frame about half a day. Several doors in a row go noticeably faster per door — for four doors plan one working day.

Will a standard door fit an old opening?

Often not. Openings in old buildings are usually higher than today’s standard and the walls are thicker. Sometimes an extension frame solves it, sometimes you need a made-to-measure door with two to four weeks lead time. We measure beforehand and tell you what is possible.

Can we buy the door ourselves?

Yes, most customers do. Send us a photo of the opening with a tape measure before buying — we will tell you the width, height, wall thickness and hinge side so the right door arrives.

Do you take the old door away?

Yes. The old door and frame are carried out and disposed of — 30–60 €/m³ by volume. A single door barely counts in that.
